ADOLESCENT DBT SKILLS GROUP

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was created by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. and it contains four content areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills. DBT therapy was designed with three components therapy, skills instruction and coaching. This group only reviews DBT skills. The skills have existed for around fifty years and they have been researched and validated to be effective with many mental health challenges.
Many of us don’t often use the word “dialectics” in our every day speech and may not even know what it means. This terms comes from Philosophy and is the art of discussing the truth about different people’s opinions in a discussion. There is usually some truth in each person’s perspective.
Life is full of contradictions like wanting to stay up late and needing to get to bed early, wanting to spend your time on having fun and needing to do some work, being out with friends and missing your family. The goal of this DBT Skills group is to help you experience a life that is worth living and increase your flexibility and resilience. You will learn skills that will both allow you to accept what is while also creating change. You will determine what thoughts, behaviors, emotions or events are causing distress and how to live more fully in the moment with acceptance and grace.
This group runs, two times a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. This group runs for twelve weeks. The participants will spend three weeks in each module giving them time to practice the new skills. This group is held on Wednesday evenings and is fifty minutes long. The group begins at 7:10 PM and completes at 8:00 PM. During this group there will be both class time where participants are instructed in new skills and some process time where participants get to share their own thoughts, emotions or actions related to the topics being discussed in group. The next group will begin on October 11, 2024. Dates and times may be subject to change due to holidays, vacations and availability.
The group fee is paid in advance and is non-refundable. There is no refund for missed groups. A payment plan may be offered upon request.
